{Romance Minute Review} Playing by the Rules by Imelda Evans

Kate Adams expected to return home from Paris with a ring on her finger. Instead, her French boyfriend, Alain, breaks up with her right before she leaves for Australia.

Unwilling to show up at her high school reunion desperate and dateless, Kate asks her best friend's brother, handsome Josh Marchant, to pretend to be her fiancée.

Josh has always had a soft spot for his sister's friend and happily takes on the role. And as they spend time together, the lines between fact and fiction blur and they're soon struggling to remember it's all just an act. But will the arrival of an unexpected visitor shatter the illusion they've created? (Blurb via Goodreads)

{Rating} 3/5 - I liked it!

{Review}
"Kate stared into the dregs of her coffee and willed herself not to cry." (page 1, line 1)
A likable story about a girl whose plan falls apart and unexpectedly finds a new path. I liked that the characters had a history but they still had a lot to learn about each other and about themselves. There are a lot of obstacles standing in their way, Kate's a planner, Josh is always in flux and they literally have an ocean between them. I wanted to keep reading to see what was going to happen next. There was a twist at the end where it deviates from the usual old boyfriend/fake boyfriend trope that kept things interesting.

I finished the books with a smile on my face and the feeling that these two could actually have a happily ever after. Evans has written another book, Rules are for Breaking, that will feature Kate's best friend and Josh's sister Jo. I'm excited to see how Evans handles 'three strikes and you're out' Jo and of course, see more of Kate and Josh.
