{Historical Romance Review} Meet the Earl at Midnight (Midnight Meetings #1) by Gina Conkle

Meet the Earl at Midnight (Midnight Meetings, #1)
It's going to take a Beast to tame this Beauty

Enigma Earl. The Phantom of London. That's what the gossip pages call Lord Edward Greenwich, a mysterious nobleman who doesn't show his face in London Society. With a reputation like that, no wonder Lydia Montgomery is horrified to be dragged from bed and packed off to live with him to save her mother from penury.

While Lydia has received all of the training a lady should endure, she's decidedly un-ladylike. She despises her corset and isn't interested in marriage. She'd prefer to remain unmarried and spend her time improving her art. But if she wants a chance at happiness, she'll have to set aside her fear of the earl and discover the man hiding behind the beast.

Will Edward and Lydia's greatest discovery be each other before time runs out?

{Review}
"If a woman's old enough to wear a corset, she's old enough to know midnight meetings spell trouble." (page 1, line 1)
I love fairy tale retellings and this one, Beauty and the Beast in Georgian England is sweet and steamy and definitely worth a read.

Lydia is not a simpering miss. She has a backbone, she has a comeback for everything. She thinks she knows who she is and what she wants. She's a talented, ambitious artist and that's her life, her art is everything to her, and then she meets Edward and he makes her reconsider everything she thinks she knows.

Edward is scarred, mentally and physically. He's a brilliant scientist. He's a planner. He has a plan and Lydia has a very specific role in his plan. It wasn't the plan for Lydia to get under his skin and turn his life upside down.

I liked that along with the chemistry and physical awareness (all those heated looks and touches) Conkle developed an emotional relationship between Lydia and Edward, they genuinely liked and respected each other.

I look forward to seeing what Conkle has planned for her next Midnight Meeting.
